Alaska Cruise Tours

A few years ago, if you had offered someone the choice between an Alaska Cruise and a Caribbean Cruise, chances are the person would choose the latter. Normally when people think of a vacation, they picture warm weather with sandy beaches and palm trees. Many people now enjoy something quite different: a vacation up north to experience the state of Alaska. Alaska cruises are becoming more and more popular a destination for tourists and sightseers. Along with the usual great food and entertainment that most other cruise lines offer, an Alaska cruise shows you a magnificent landscape with snow-capped mountains and breathtaking glaciers, as well as offer you the opportunity of a lifetime to see the spectacular wildlife.

One of the many reasons why people visit Alaska is to view glaciers, which are rivers of ice. These slow-moving masses of ice are formed by accumulated snow in mountain valleys. They can vary greatly in size, with the larger ones acting as temporary homes for wildlife such as seals. If you are lucky, you may see glaciers shed large chunks of ice into the sea with a thunderous roar. Some tours even offer you the chance to set foot on a glacier!

Another reason to visit Alaska is to enjoy the abundant wildlife. In the summer months, there is a high chance of seeing magnificent humpback whales. Other aquatic animals include killer and beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, seals, sea lions, sea otters, and salmon. Land animals such as grizzly and black bears, wide-antlered caribou, moose, wolves, and Dahl sheep can also be found throughout Alaska. If you are a birdwatcher, then you will have the opportunity to see bald eagles, horned and tufted puffins, docile kittiwakes, and red-tailed hawks in their natural environments.

Cruise itineraries will vary depending on the cruise line chosen. Interesting destinations and ports of call include the following:
• Anchorage – Alaska’s largest community and a popular tourist destination
• College Fjord – home to 16 ice-blue glaciers that surround your cruise vessel as you glide into it
• Glacier Bay – national park where you can experience the wildlife and glaciers
• Icy Strait – view endangered humpback whales in late spring to early summer as they feed on plankton
• Juneau – Alaska’s capital with Mt. Juneau and Mt. Roberts in the background
• Ketchikan – first major community as you travel north, this town has the world’s largest collection of totem poles and countless hiking trails
• Mt. McKinley – located in Denali National Park and Reserve, it is the highest point in North America
• Prudhoe Bay – has the largest oil field in North America
• Seattle – known for its Space Needle attraction and night time dance clubs
• Vancouver – full of places to visit such as parks, beaches, gardens, museums, and art galleries
• Victoria – known for its many gardens, including Butchart Gardens

Depending on the cruise itinerary, there may be onshore excursions offered at select ports of call. These activities can range from fishing, horseback riding, kayaking and white water rafting to hiking and helicopter tours. Only by taking part in such activities will you be able to experience Alaska to the fullest.
